Gabriel Borba Filho (São Paulo, 1942)
Gabriel Borba lived and worked in São Paulo, (1942-1989) and presently lives and works in Embu das Artes, State of São Paulo. Borba, graduated in Architecture at Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo of the University of São Paulo and became one of the pioneers in video art in the 1970s. He took part in the 10th Paris Biennial, (1979) and in the 16th São Paulo Biennial (1981). His work is featured in the permanent collections in Museu de Arte Contemporânea of the University of São Paulo, in the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art, in MoMA, New York, in Centro de Cultura Contemporáneo de Barcelona (CCCB), in KADIST Collection in San Francisco, USA, in Centro Galego de Arte Contemporanea (CGAC) in Santiago de Compostela, ES among others. He started experimenting with video in the early 1970’s; he also draws and has created artist’s books, installations and performances. He was quite involved in the experimentalist dynamics of Museu de Arte Contemporânea of the University of São Paulo during Walter Zanini’s tenure. He worked as an assistant to philosopher Vilém Flusser in Theory of Communication at Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado, São Paulo, as a professor of Visual Arts at the Department of Cinema, Theater and Radio-Television (CTR,), at School of Communication and Art (ECA USP) of the Univerity of SãoPaulo and of Visual Communication and Industrial Design at the Catholic University of Campinas, SP. He was one of the founders of Cooperativa Geral para Assuntos da Arte (General Co-op for Artistic Issues) in 1974 and of Cooperativa de Artistas Plásticos de São Paulo (São Paulo Fine Artists Co-op) in 1978. Between 1984 and 2012 he was the Director of Visual Arts at the São Paulo Cultural Center (CCSP); Culture Consultant of the Metropolitan Planning Company of São Paulo (EMPLASA) and the Director of the Division of Museography of Museu de Arte Contemporânea of the University of São Paulo.
